My first day as a netizen
It all started in the summer of 99.(No, I am not singing a remix version of the popular song).
I was in Bangalore just after completing my
+2 or PUC, whatever you call it. Now as it was my first independent trip outside my home state Assam. I reached Bangalore with my friends in Guwahati Bangalore express. As I was new to the city we took a cheap hotel near the railway station.
I have been hearing about internet in those days but never had a clear idea about what actually is this thing. In fact I went to the local BSNL office in Guwahati to "see" internet and all I saw was a computer and some video on it. So all I know about the net is that it has something to do with cinema.
So on a evening when it was raining heavily outside we are just sitting in our hotel room and having a nice time, suddenly the topic of internet came up. At that point of time none of us had any idea about it except one. He told us that he has already seen internet and he knows everything about it and none of us any idea about it we have to agree with whatever he says. So in that meeting it was finalized that he will take me to show internet on the next day.
So next evening he took me to a near by cyber café in the majestic area of Bangalore. The guy at the café was really friendly. He told me that it will have to pay Rs 100/- for an hour of internet. As instructed by my friend, I agreed to pay him to see the internet. Next he took us to a computer to show internet and as we (me and my friend) didn't know anything about Internet, the café owner was using it and we are looking from a distance.
At first he showed me the hotmail log in page. I did not had a clue about hotmail or what it does. So there is a blank look on my face.
Then he asked me about my hotmail id, obviously I did not had one at that point of time. So he asked me to open a hotmail account, and he informed me that I have to pay Rs 50 extra for opening an hotmail email account. I agreed immediately.
So for around 20 minutes of staring at the net I had to pay the owner 150 bucks. You might be laughing at this but then I guess that's how you learn a new thing, so no regrets.
